Gameforge Announces Closure of Swords of Legends Online MMORPG by End of June
German video game publisher Gameforge has officially announced the impending shutdown of Swords of Legends Online (SOLO), the free-to-play MMORPG that brought Chinese mythology and martial arts combat to Western audiences. The game, which has struggled to maintain a sustainable player base since its Western release, will permanently close its servers at the end of June, marking another casualty in the increasingly competitive massively multiplayer online gaming market.
Swords of Legends Online originally launched in China in 2019 under developer Wangyuan Shengtang Entertainment (also known as Aurogon), where it achieved considerable success among Asian audiences. The game drew inspiration from the popular Chinese television series and novel of the same name, featuring a rich narrative steeped in ancient Chinese mythology, immortal cultivators, and epic martial arts battles. Gameforge secured the publishing rights for Western markets and released the game in July 2021, initially as a buy-to-play title before transitioning to a free-to-play model in an attempt to attract more players.
The transition to free-to-play in 2022 was a strategic decision aimed at revitalizing the game’s declining population. However, despite offering stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 4, action-packed combat systems, and unique class designs based on traditional Chinese warrior archetypes, the game failed to capture the long-term attention of Western MMO enthusiasts. Competition from established titles like Final Fantasy XIV, World of Warcraft, and Guild Wars 2, combined with the emergence of newer releases such as Lost Ark, created an extremely challenging environment for Swords of Legends Online to carve out its niche.
Industry analysts point to several factors that contributed to the game’s struggles in Western markets. The heavy reliance on Chinese cultural elements, while refreshing for some players, created a learning curve that proved too steep for others unfamiliar with concepts like cultivation and Xianxia storytelling traditions. Additionally, the game’s original design catered specifically to Asian gaming preferences, including certain monetization strategies and content pacing that didn’t translate seamlessly to Western expectations. Localization issues and the challenge of maintaining consistent content updates across different regional versions also hampered the game’s growth potential.
The closure of Swords of Legends Online reflects a broader trend in the MMO industry, where maintaining a live service game requires substantial ongoing investment in server infrastructure, content development, customer support, and marketing. For publishers like Gameforge, which manages multiple online titles including AION, Metin2, and NosTale, difficult decisions must sometimes be made to allocate resources toward games with stronger performance metrics. The company has historically demonstrated willingness to support niche titles, but financial sustainability ultimately determines which projects continue operating.
Players who have invested time and money into Swords of Legends Online are understandably disappointed by the announcement. The game featured several innovative systems, including housing, elaborate crafting mechanics, and a unique approach to class design that allowed characters to switch between healing and damage-dealing roles. The community that did form around the game was passionate and dedicated, creating guides, organizing events, and maintaining active discussion forums despite the relatively small population.
Gameforge has not yet released detailed information regarding potential refunds for recent purchases or any commemorative events leading up to the shutdown. Players are encouraged to log in during the remaining weeks to complete any unfinished content and say goodbye to the world they explored. The closure serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of online gaming, where even beautifully crafted worlds can fade away when they fail to achieve commercial viability. As the MMO genre continues to evolve, with new entries constantly vying for player attention and subscription dollars, the story of Swords of Legends Online will join the growing list of ambitious projects that couldn’t quite find their footing in an unforgiving market.
